Windows XP’s “Start” menu contained a “Run” function that allowed a user to launch an application, file, or folder by typing in a text string.

I thought that this would not change in Windows Vista. However, when I first clicked the start button in Vista, I was surprised—the “Run” button appeared to be missing.

After some trial and error, I finally figured out that the search box in Windows Vista’s “Start” menu also functions as the “Run” window/button. To use it, simply type into the search box what you would normally type into the “Run” window and then press the “Enter” key on your keyboard.
